March 17, 2016 - Interpreta Co-founder and President Gary Rayner addressed Startup Grind San Diego in a fireside chat. Gary's discussion focused on lessons learned as a serial entrepreneur, and what it takes to build, grow and lead a startup to a profitable exit.
Highlights from Gary’s Startup Grind talk:
At age four, Gary Rayner knew he wanted to be an inventor. Not the most conventional dream job for a child, but Gary is not a conventional guy. Growing up in Australia, Gary developed his first invention at age 10 – an automatic car headlight dimmer. Eventually he earned an M.S. in Computer and Communication Systems as well as an MBA from Queensland University of Technology, and went on to author 25 granted US patents. Gary continues to push creative boundaries as a driven, serial entrepreneur looking for the next challenge to solve.
Over the years his achievements have garnered numerous product and presentation awards, and, in 2013, the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year, San Diego.
Answer the Need
One of Gary’s first entrepreneurial successes was serving as the Chief Engineer for NiteRider. Seeing the need for bicycle lights to have a longer battery life, Gary developed and patented a disruptive digital lighting technology that caused the industry to follow NiteRider’s lead. Technology developed by Gary led the company to become number one in high performance lighting systems for bike, scuba, police, and search and rescue.
Gary also founded DriveCam (now Lytx™), a San Diego-based company that is a leader in delivering driver safety and compliance solutions. Later he was VP of Business Development at Anvita, a health care analytics company that provides caregivers and payers with real-time and batch mode clinical insights to improve healthcare outcomes, which was later sold to Humana.
In 2009, Gary saw the need to have a phone case that matched his active lifestyle. He wanted the ability to use his phone wherever he was – at the beach, while camping or in the snow – without worrying his phone would get damaged. The protective cases on the market at the time were bulky or provided limited functionality. Gary decided to create his own solution, an all-protective, everyday smartphone and tablet case called LifeProof. The company experienced rapid growth and was acquired by Otterbox in 2013.
At Interpreta, Gary and his co-founder partners continue to push boundaries in the healthcare industry. Interpreta provides an analytics service that delivers both population and single patient analytics for precision medicine – today. With daily re-computation of vital clinical and population data, combined with genomic data, Interpreta delivers actionable insights, helps tailor therapies and increases efficiencies throughout the healthcare continuum. Interpreta’s analytics engine can accurately examine extremely large healthcare data sets daily. Today it can process data for about four million patients within just a few hours, and Gary and his team continue to push for higher amounts of patient data that Interpreta can analyze daily.
Take Care of People
Gary encourages Interpreta team members to extend their personal influence into areas where they are fostering the spirit of innovation, creativity, and success. “Look after the people who help you succeed” has always been Gary’s business philosophy. He says he strives to be a leader who takes care of those who take care of him.
